Vancouver (5-8-1=11 pts) played the 5th game of a 6-game road trip tonight at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers (10-4-0=20 pts).

The Vancouver Canucks defeated the New York Rangers 5-3 , ending their five straight regulation road losses (1-5-1); ending their losing streak at 9 games (1-8-1); ending their 4 game losing streak on their road trip; and making it three consecutive games of scoring at least two goals.

Four Canucks registered two point games in the victory; and three netted their first goals of the season; and two garnered their first assists/points as Canucks:

• Alex Burrows scored his first two goals of the season
• Sven Baertschi scored his first goal of the season, and got an assist
• Bo Horvat picked up two assists
• Henrik Sedin scored his 5th goal of the season, to take over the team lead in goals; and had an assist

Loui Ericksson ended his 13 game scoreless drought by scoring in his 14 game of the season, to pick up his first goal.

Michael Chaput and Jack Skille registered their first points as a Canuck, picking up an assist each in the win.

Brendan Gaunce, Erik Gudbranson, Derek Dorsett also picked up helpers to help end the Canucks losing streak and get their first road win of the season; and of the road trip.

It was the first time this season, that Vancouver scored five goals in a game.

It was a game of firsts.

Coming into the game, Canucks had only led for 34:10 in 13 games this season or 4.3 percent of their games so far this season.

 

Canucks starting goalie Jacob Marstrom, stopped 23 of 26 shots in the game, his 4th win overall, and first road win of the season.

Markstrom, is now 4-2-1 with a 2.23 GAA and a .915 save percentage, on the season, in 7 game starts.

Jacob Markstrom also improved his perfect record versus the Rangers to 3-0-0 in his career.

Canucks, with their win tonight, are tied for 24th place in the NHL (tied with Dallas, Calgary and Nashville); and are in tied for 5th place in the Pacific division with Calgary, with 11 points; 8 points behind the Oilers, 1 point ahead of the Arizona Coyotes, who have two games in hand on Vancouver.

The Canucks entered tonight’s game having  lost 9 straight games, going 0-8-1 and getting outscored 31-12. Their longest losing streak is 10 games (1997-98).

Game Summary

The game was scoreless in the first period.

In the second, Pavel Buchnevich would put the Rangers up 1-0; his 3rd goal of the season. Assists went to Jesper Fast (5) and Brady Skeji (9), at 7:20.

It was the 12th time in 14 games that the Canucks have given up the opening goal of a game this season.

With the Rangers in need of a line change, the Canucks would strike for their first goal of the game, to tie the game at 1-1.

Loui Ericksson, his first goal of the season, and as a Canucks, at 15:18, assisted by Henrik Sedin (3) and Daniel Sedin (3).

In the third period, Henrik Sedin coming out of the penalty box after serving a high sticking penalty, was feed the puck, and blasted the puck past Ranger goalie Antti Raanta, for his 5th goal of the season, to put the Canucks ahead by a goal, 2-1. Assisted by Erik Gudbranson (3) and Derek Dorsett (2), at 2:29.

Rick Nash would tie the game at 2-2 on the power play, with his 400th goal of his career, and 7th of the season, at 5:27; assisted by Pavel Buchnevich (3) and Kevin Hayes (7).

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist would enter the game, for Antti Raanta after Raanta was run into by Markus Granlund, earlier in the period. Speculation was, it was the result of the NHL concussion protocol.

It wouldn’t be long before, Lundqvist would be tested, and that he was, as Alex Burrows would get the puck past him at 9:21, his 1st of the season, to make it 3-2 Canucks. Assisted by Bo Horvat (2) and Sven Baertschi (3).

After an unsuccessful power play, the Vancouver Canucks would extend their lead to 4-2, when Sven Baertschi would join Ericksson and Burrows, in getting his first goal of the season, at 13:08; assisted by Jack Skille (1) and Michael Chaput (1).

Antti Raanta would eventually return to the game, replacing backup Henrik Lundqvist, who allowed two goals on six shots, giving the Canucks a 4-2 lead.

With just over three minutes left in the game, the Rangers would pull their goalie in an attempt to pull within one of Vancouver but it would back fire.

Alex Burrows, with his second goal of the game, second of the season, would put the nail in the Ranger coffin, with an empty net goal, making the score 5-2; assisted by Bo Horvat (3) and Brendan Gaunce (2) at 16:54.

Mika Zibanejad, with his third of the year, would pull the Rangers to within two of Vancouver 5-3 at 19:01; assisted by Pavel Buchnevich (4).

But the Rangers would not get any closer.

In brief:

• Canucks tied 0-0 after one; tied 1-1 after two.
• Vancouver out shot New York 29-26 in the game.
• The Vancouver penalty kill was 4 for 5 , with 3 shots against; 5 shots for; 0 shorthanded goals for; the power play was 0 for 2, with 2 shots for, 3 shots against and 0 shorthanded goals against.
