Game Review: Canucks Defeat Colorado 3-2 On Granlund’s Shootout Winner, Markstrom Outstanding, Edler Hurt

Vancouver (9-11-2=18 pts) played the final game of a three game road trip tonight at the Pepsi Center against Western conference rivals, Colorado Avalanche (9-10-1=19 pts), winning in a shootout thriller, 3-2.

Loui Eriksson, with his 5th goal of the season, 3rd in the last 4 games, got things started, with a power play goal in the first period, and Vancouver led 1-0 going into the second period.

Alex Burrows, potted his 4th goal of the season, to put Vancouver up 2-1 in the 3rd period, but Colorado forced overtime, with a late goal in the third.

An exciting overtime settled nothing, and it would take Markus Granlund to score the shootout winner, to send the Canucks back home with two of a possible three wins from the brief road trip.

Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom was named the first star of the game, making it possible for Vancouver to get the chance to win.

Bo Hutton, with an assist, his 8th of the season, kept his points streak alive for another game, by extending it to 4 games (2-4=6 pts); other assists came from Granlund (4) and Ben Hutton (3).

Alex Edler, left the game in the first period, after five shifts, after he blocked a shot with his hand/wrist and did not return. His status is not known but does not look good. More will be known after x-rays are taken.

Markstrom stopped 33 of 35 shots in the game, and after tonight, is 6-3-2 with a 2.73 GAA and a .902 save percentage.

Vancouver is now 3-7-1 on the road.

The Canucks concluded their sixth of 16 back-to-back series with tonight’s visit to Colorado. They are 4-7-1 in back-to-backs thus far this season.

Canucks, continue to occupy 6th place in the Pacific division, with 20 points; 5 points behind the 2nd and 3rd place Kings and Sharks; and a point behind Calgary, 4 points in front of Arizona.

Game Summary

In the first, the Canucks would receive an early power play opportunity, and Loui Eriksson scored his 5th goal of the season, at 3:46, assisted by Markus Granlund (4)and Ben Hutton (3), to make it 1-0.

Alex Edler left the first period after blocking a shot, and would not return.

In the second, with the Canucks in disarray, the Avalanche would get the tying goal to make it 1-1, at 11:15, scored by Mikhail Grigorenko (2), assisted by Matt Duchene (6) and Carl Soderberg (4).

In the third, the Canucks brought a record of 2-1-0 when entering the final period tied after two periods.

Alex Burrows, wasted little time taking leadership, scoring his 4th goal of the season, 86 seconds into the period, giving Vancouver a 2-1 lead. Assisted by Bo Horvat (8), at 1:26.

For Horvat, the assist would extend his points streak (2-4=6 pts) to four games.

The Avalanche, would not go away, and tie the game at 2-2, when Jarome Iginla (3) scored, assisted by Fedor Tyutin (6) and Blake Comeau (2), at 3:56.

As the period moved on, Colorado began out shooting the Canucks, and taking more of the play, trying to get that go ahead goal.

Regulation play ended without a decision, and off to overtime the game went, with the Canucks playing better in the last minutes of the third period.

An exciting overtime would not decide anything, and it would be a shootout that would decide the winner, and it would be the Canucks coming back to win it, their second win their three game road trip.

Vancouver (8-11-2=18 pts) play the final game of a three game road trip tonight at the Pepsi Center against Western conference rivals, Colorado Avalanche (9-10-0=18 pts).

The Canucks conclude their sixth of 16 back-to-back series with tonight’s visit to Colorado. They are 3-7-1 in back-to-backs thus far this season:

  • First Game: 1-4-1, with 8-GF, 16-GA; shutout twice
  • Second Game: 2-3-0, with 13-GF, 16-GA; shutout once

In the their last game, the Canucks lost a squeaker 2-1, against the Dallas Stars last night, who came back with two goals from a 1-0 deficit, in the middle period, and held on for their one goal victory, denying the Canucks a third road win of the season, and second of the road trip.

Vancouver has lost 10 consecutive games when scoring two or less goals in a game, after winning three straight at the beginning of the season.

Jayson Megna got his first goal as a Vancouver Canuck and Bo Horvat, received an assist to keep his points streak going, now at three games (2-3=5 pts).
