The Vancouver Canucks (9-2-0-1), 2nd in the Pacific Division, welcomed the Edmonton Oilers (2-8-0-1), 7th in the Pacific Division, to Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C.
It was the Canucks 7th win in their last 8-games (7-0-0-1) overall; and 5th win in 6 games (5-0-0-1) at home this season.
Vancouver goals came from: Quinn Hughes, Pius Suter, Brock Boeser (2 PP goals), Nils Hoglander, J.T. Miller (PP). Helpers from: Andrei Kuzmenko, Filip Hronek (2), Dakota Joshua, Ian Cole, Hughes (3), Miller, Sam Lafferty, EliasPettersson.
Canucks starting goalie Thatcher Demko stopped 40 shots to earn his 7th win of the young season. He has a 1.61 GAA and a .948 SV% and is on a 6-game winning streak.
He is currently 7-2-0 with 2 shutouts in 9 games played.
GAME REVIEW
The Oilers took the play to the Canucks off the opening face-off , registering 7 shots in a row before Vancouver got their first shot of the game by Carson Soucy.
The Canucks weathered the storm with some outstanding saves by starting goalie Thatcher Demko.
Edmonton continued to out play Vancouver and received a power play opportunity.
With 16 seconds left in the Canucks penalty, Oilers scored the opening goal to take a 1-0 lead. Mattias Ekholm (1) assists Sam Gagner (1) and Evander Kane (6) at 6:42.
At one point in the first period Oilers were outshooting the Canucks 19-2, with Vancouver unable to establish any sustained offense and scoring opportunities on Oilers starting goalie Stuart Skinner.
With the Canucks top line on the ice and with a little help from the visitors deflecting the puck into their own net, the Canucks tied the game at 1-1 less than 5 minutes later. Goal was credited to Quinn Hughes (5) assists to Andrei Kuzmenko (7) and Filip Hronek (12) at 11:30.
Less than two minutes after tieing the game, Vancouver struck again to go up 2-1 over Edmonton, with Pius Suter (3) burying the puck behind Skinner, assisted by Dakota Joshua (2) and Ian Cole (2) at 13:22.
The Canucks went on their first power play of the game 82 seconds after taking the lead and within 8 seconds of the man advantage took a two goal lead at 3-1, on a goal by Brock Boeser (9) with assists to J.T. Miller (11) and Quinn Hughes (13) at 14:52.
In the second period, Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko got caught behind the net and gave up the puck, and ended up on the ice behind the net and the Oilers scored into an open net to pull within a goal of Vancouver at 3-2. Leon Draisaitl (5) assisted by Warren Foegele (2) at 7:38.
After the Canucks failed to score on a power play advantage, the Canucks regained their two goal advantage at 4-2, as Nils Hoglander (3) scored off a rebound from a Sam Lafferty (3) shot at 10:52.
In the final period, the Oilers appeared to score a good goal a minute into the period, but upon review, it was determined to be kicked in by Warren Foegele and disallowed.
As play continued in the period, Connor McDavid and other Edmonton players started to take their frustration out on Vancouver players and started unraveling, losing their poise and composure.
Penalties ensued to both teams, including J.T. Miller, Connor McDavid, and Leon Draisaitl.
Vancouver ended up going on the power play, and after coming out of the penalty box, J.T. Miller scored a power play goal at 7:51 that was delayed and reviewed while play continued, and upon confirmation, the buzzer sounded to signal a good goal, stopping play. Assists went to Hughes (14) and Hronek (13).
With the Canucks leading 5-2, Edmonton head coach Jay Woodcroft received a game misconduct for badgering the referee’s, and Vancouver headed to the power play at 13:13.
Vancouver received a late power play, and Brock Boeser (10) scored his second of the game, assists to Hughes (15) and Elias Pettersson (15) at 19:04 to make the final score 6-2 Canucks.
