The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they have hired Derek Clancey as Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel.
“We are excited to add Derek to our hockey operations department,” said Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving.
“I feel Derek is one of the premier talent evaluators in our game. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and will play a big role as we continue our goal of building a championship team.”

Clancey, 54, arrives in Toronto after spending last season with the Vancouver Canucks as an Assistant General Manager.
Clancy was hired by Canucks President of Hockey Operations, Jim Rutherford when Rutherford was also interim General Manager, on December 15, 2021.
As Assistant GM, Clancey worked closely with Rutherford, Canucks President of Hockey Operations initially, and then under Canucks GM Patrik Allvin when he was hired as the new GM. Clancy oversaw the Canucks professional and amateur scouting staffs.

History
- Clancey served as Pittsburgh’s Director, Player Personnel between 2019 and February 2021. He was also the team’s director of professional scouting for nine years and a pro scout for three seasons. And further, contributed to their three Stanley Cup victories.
- He was also pro scout for the Calgary Flames in 2021-22.
- Clancey has also spent time coaching during his career, racking up an overall head coaching record of 260-184-52 in the ECHL with:
- Dayton Bombers (2006-07)
- Reading Royals (2003-05)
- Jackson Bandits (1999-2003)
- He also served as an assistant coach of the Manchester Monarchs (2005-06) of the American Hockey League, the top minor-league affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings.
- Clancey played eight professional seasons in the ECHL with Winston-Salem, Erie, Toledo, Columbus, and Chesapeake before his coaching career.
- He was elected to the ECHL’s Hall of Fame in 2020.
