Vancouver Canucks defenseman Carson Soucy has been suspended for one game for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid during Game 3 of the teams’ Second Round Series in Edmonton on Sunday, May 12, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced.

The incident occurred at the 20-minute mark of the third period of the game the Canucks won to take a 2-1 series lead. Soucy was assessed a minor penalty for cross-checking.

The Vancouver Canucks will employ a “next man up” philosophy, according to coach Rick Tocchet, after defenseman Carson Soucy was suspended one game Monday for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid in the facial area.

“We’ve been doing it all year,” Tocchet said.

Defenseman Noah Juulsen will enter the lineup for Vancouver tonight against the Oilers.

Both Carson Soucy and Connor McDavid commented on the incident and suspension:

“Obviously, there wasn’t any intent to get a player up that high, so I kind of think it was an unfortunate incident,” Soucy said. “I think we can just leave it at that.”

“They play a physical brand of hockey. It’s fun to be a part of,” the Edmonton captain said, tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Soucy will be missed by Vancouver as he has 4 assists and is plus-3 in 9 games in the Playoffs. He had 6 points and a +/- rating of +10 rating in the regular season.
