IIHF Council To Meet Sunday Regarding KHL Club CSKA, Goalie Ivan Fedotov, Repeated Violations of Sanctions

MOSCOW, September 9. /TASS/. The Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) will meet on Sunday to discuss the situation with the next appearance of goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov on the ice as part of CSKA Moscow, IIHF President Luc Tardif told TASS.

On Friday, Fedotov appeared in the starting lineup of CSKA for the away match with Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik. He spent the entire match on the ice, allowed 1 goal, and stopped 12 shots. CSKA won with a score of 5:1.

“This is another step in a series of violations of our rules. The IIHF Council will meet on Sunday to discuss this. Once again, the IIHF will stand firm in respecting the fundamental rules of respect for the contract and respect for the transfer system.”

IIHF President Luc Tardif

Previously, the IIHF fined the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) $5.6 thousand for Fedotov’s play in the first match of the KHL season with Ak Bars Kazan (2:5), as it believes that the player has a valid contract with the National Hockey League club “Philadelphia”.

The international federation reported that if Fedotov continues to play for the army club, other disciplinary measures may be taken.

Fedotov played the subsequent matches of CSKA with Admiral Vladivostok (4:1) and Metallurg Magnitogorsk (2:4).

The IIHF sided with Philadelphia in a dispute with CSKA regarding the rights to Fedotov – the American club postponed the validity of his contract from the 2022/23 season to the 2023/24 season due to the hockey player’s service in the army.

The International Federation imposed a one-year ban on international transfers on CSKA, and Fedotov was disqualified from September 1 until the end of 2023, as he did not return to the NHL club.
