Michkov Strikes Again

If you don’t know who Matvei Michkov is, you might want to learn pretty quickly.

The 16-year-old has been turning heads for quite awhile, which is why he’s neck and neck with Connor Bedard as the projected first overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft.

In April, he scored 12 goals and notched four assists for 16 points in seven games as he helped Russia earn silver at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship and a whole bunch of individual honors in the process, including MVP of the tournament.

This past weekend, he played for Team Russia at the Karjala Cup, featuring senior mens national teams from Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Russia. When he scored this beauty of a goal, he became the youngest player to score a national team goal for Russia.

He’s currently in the first year of a five year deal to play for SKA St Petersburg in the KHL and has two goals and an assist, but 18 points in 8 games at the MHL level. Barring any health issues, he’ll play for Team Russia next month at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.
