GAME REVIEW

Vancouver was looking to get back to winning ways after a 5-2 loss in Toronto the night before.

Montreal beat NHL leading Boston Bruins at home 3-2 in OT.

Teddy Blueger made his season debut against the Canadiens in the opening period.

Only one shot was registered in the first five minutes of play, that going to the Canadiens.

Canucks struggled to get some shots in the Canadiens end, as Montreal stayed with Vancouver, disrupting the Canucks effectively, having one registered shot half way through the 1rst period.

Late in the opening period the Canucks had 19 shot attempts registering only 5 shots on net.

Both teams struggled to establish their offensive game and set the tone for an efficient game, with both teams sloppy at both ends of the ice.

Both teams came out fast in the 2nd period, looking for that all-important opening goal.

Carson Soucy and Tyler Myers would get hurt early in the period, both struggling to get to the bench on the same shift. Soucy would later leave the game.

Vancouver would open the scoring,  going from one end to the other, as Conor Garland (2) potted the goal, assists J.T. Miller (13) and Quinn Hughes (18) at 6:15.

The Canadiens took little time responding as they scored quickly, but the play was ruled offside, leaving the score 1-0 Vancouver.

Montreal goalie Jake Allen, with the Canucks swarming in the Montreal end , loses his stick and the Canucks would take advantage and take a two goal advantage at 2-0.

Ilya Mikheyev (6) assist Andrei Kuzmenko (10) at 6:15.

A power play advantage after the goal for Vancouver gave the Canucks an opportunity to go up by three goals but they were unable to beat Jake Allen.

Approaching the 2 minute mark left in the period, Conor Garland would do all the work in front of the Montreal goal, and Dakota Joshua would bury the puck to put Vancouver up 3-0. Joshua (2) from Garland (3) and Filip Hronek (16) at 17:57.

Canucks would be reminded of the Canadiens come back the night before and their win in overtime over Boston, so the Canucks would have take control of the final period from the opening face-off to pocket the game in the win column.

The Canucks came out trying to take control but they would get into penalty trouble, including trying to kill a 48 second 2-man advantage for Montreal.

With a 5-4 man advantage the Canadiens would get on the score sheet at 3-1 Vancouver.

Mike Matheson (4) assists to Sean Monahan (7) and John Anderson (2) at 6:46.

A slash against Elias Pettersson by Canadiens Tanner Pearson would result in a Canucks power play to give Vancouver a chance to regain a three goal lead. They had some great looks and great opportunities, but Allen shut the door for Montreal.

Vancouver would continue to get great scoring chances as the period was nearing an end but find a hot goalie in the way in getting that 3-goal lead back.

With 2:10 left, Montreal pulled Allen, and without him in the net, Brock Boeser (12) would score in an empty net to seal the victory, assisted by Joshua (3) and Tyler Myers (4) at 18:30.

Montreal would make it too little too late, with 48.5 seconds left, scoring to come within two goals, keeping Allen out trying to get another goal.

Arber Xhekaj (1) assists Jordan Harris (3) and Allen (1) at 19:11.

Phillip Di Giuseppe (3) would finish the scoring, burning the Canadiens with another empty-net goal assists to Miller (14) and Boeser (6) at 19:42.

GAME REVIEW

Vancouver was looking for a heads up, up and down the ice team effort , supporting starting goalie Thatcher Demko, resulting in the opening goal of the game against the Maple Leafs.

Canucks were trying, outshooting Toronto 5-1 after five minutes.

Mark Giordano of Toronto and Dakota Joshua of the Canucks were handed out fighting penalties, with Giordano getting the instigator penalty.

Canucks power play did not disappoint as J.T. Miller potted the man advantage goal, his 9th of the season, assists to Quinn Hughes (17) and Elias Pettersson (18) at 5:43.

It was the Canucks 9th time in the first 14 games of the season they scored the opening goal, and they were undefeated when getting the first goal of a game.

Toronto would respond after a Maple Leafs power play ended, as Matthew Knies (4) assists to Tyler Bertuzzi (2) and Max Domi (8) at 8:37 to even the game at 1-1.

Ian Cole would lay a solid hit against Toronto forward Nicholas Robertson after and result in Max Domi and Cole fighting. Domi got the instigator penalty for drawing the fight, putting Canucks on the power play again.

With the man advantage, Canucks regained the lead at 2-1, in the 5th power play multi-goal game in the first 14-games of the early season.

Pius Suter (4) the scorer with assists to Anthony Beauvillier (4) and Filip Hronek (15) at 15:47.

In the middle period, Maple Leafs continued their visit to the Sin Bin with a minor penalty with the game less than two minutes old, but Vancouver would be held without a goal with the man advantage.

Toronto would provide great pressure on the Canucks in front of Demko, and square the game at 2-2, as the started to improve their puck possession in the Canucks end.

William Nylander (20), with assists to John Tavares (10) and Tyler Bertuzzi (3) at 4:53.

With Toronto continuing to stay in penalty trouble, Vancouver continued to get man advantage opportunities but were having problems burying the puck, and were 2 for 6 with the extra man approaching the halfway point of the game, with four consecutive power plays wasted. That would cost Vancouver.

After shutting down a couple Canucks power plays, the Maple Leafs received their 2nd power play of the game, and were looking to take the lead.

Maple Leafs had great looks with the extra man but Canucks goalie Demko kept the home team scoreless on the Leafs power play.

Toronto finally got their first lead of the game at 3-2 as Nick Gregor (2) from Morgan Rielly (10) and Bobby McMann (1) combined for the even strength goal at 14:22.

Vancouver would enter the 3rd period, having lost 13 of the last 16 road games in Toronto, and behind by a goal.

They would have to overcome that history along with not holding and / or extending their lead in the 2nd period.

But Toronto extended their lead to 4-2 instead, in the first five minutes, their 3rd unanswered goal, with Nicholas Robertson, his second goal, assisted by Tie Domi (9) at 4:56.

Toronto made it four unanswered goals, less than five minutes later, David Kampf (1) assists Gregor (1) and McMann (2) at 9:13 to make the final score 5-2 Toronto.
