The Canucks need to elevate their game to the next level of play and development. They need to be a consistent playoff contender, making the playoffs year after year.

The Vancouver Canucks’ journey from a playoff contender to a Stanley Cup Finalist between the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons provides a historical “blueprint” of a Canucks contender. Of a team that took their game to the next level with each season of 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11.

For this current team, they too need to be the best they can be for a period of time, excelling to be even better in the next period that follows, and so on, just like the 2008-2011 team.

That first period of time will arrive on October 9, 2025, and they need to be much better than last season. Goal-oriented both on and off the ice. Team-oriented on and off the ice.

Those Sedins-era teams serve as a template; the question is where the present Canucks team fits into that template at this time, and the answers will indicate where the present Canucks team stands with respect to its core, skill sets, including chemistry and top-to-bottom depth.

That 2008-2011 team never had it easy; their success and lofty achievements were years in the making. Over time, special pieces came together along with the traits of a “powerful franchise.”

Playoff runs in the first decade of this century established the Canucks as a team to be respected, and more than capable of beating any team on any given night, any day of the week, at home or on the road.

The Canucks made playoff appearances during the Sedins’ time with the team (2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2006-07), but their most consistent “contender” window is generally considered to be the stretch between 2008-09 and 2012-13, and the 2014-15 season. They were particularly strong in 2010-11 and 2011-12, winning back-to-back Presidents’ Trophies.

Through a series of articles on this topic, we will examine how the present Canucks team can benefit from the history of Canucks teams during the Sedins’ era and how the Canucks’ can rise to be a serious playoff contender and Stanley Cup Final participant again.
