Metallurg hosted Kunlun Red Star at the same time who came from Chelyabinsk with a 2: 3 overtime defeat. The home team recently had to admit defeat in their own stadium for the first time in the KHL by Spartak Moscow.
Kunlun goalie Paris O’Brien was checked once in the starting third and when Metallurg was on the ice for the first time with one man more in the 14th minute, it didn’t take long for the opening goal to be achieved. Philippe Maillet played an ideal cross pass to Nikolai Goldobin who slammed the puck under the crossbar.
In the second section, the game seemed to continue for the team from the Stahlstadt and so Nikita Korostelyovin scored from the blue line in the 28th minute to take the two-goal lead. But Kunlun was not defeated and was able to write in a power play in the 30th minute by Brandon Yip for the first time and in the 34th minute the guests in the neutral third got the puck and the final attempt by Clifford Pu was slightly deflected by Metallurg defender Grigryev so that Juho Olkinuora had no chance to defend in goal. So the game went into the first break with this 2-2.
Metallurg continued to develop chances and in the 47th minute they managed to take the lead again. After Paris O’Brien had already cleared twice, he had no chance with a Maxim Karpov margin.
Yegor Yakovlev helped Kunlun to a happy equalizer. Behind his own goal, the Magnitogorsk player played the puck into his own danger zone, where Alex Riche gratefully accepted the gift and two minutes later scored to make it 3: 3.
Metallurg continued to put pressure on, and after just another 77 seconds, Philippe Maillet’s 12th goal of the season led to the home side’s 4-3 lead.
Kunlun was dangerous again shortly afterwards and so Yegor Korobkin managed another two-goal lead in the minute. Pavel Akolzin initiated this hit. He prevailed behind the goal against Colin Joe and then played the puck to Korobkin.
Metallurg had two more very good chances to extend the lead further, but Paris O’Brien was able to distinguish himself several times. In the 58th minute he had to admit defeat to a one-timer Maxim Karpov from a very acute angle.
The fourth goal of the guests by Luke Lockhart 19 seconds before the end did not change the victory of the home team. With this 6: 4 win, Metallurg now has a cushion of two points in the East Conference again on the pursuer and big competitor Traktor Chelyabinsk.
