Vancouver (4-4-1=9 pts) finished up a three game homestand tonight at Rogers Arena against the Washington Capitals (4-2-1=9 pts), losing their 5th consecutive game (0-4-1), and picking up their 4th consecutive regulation loss.

Canucks finished their 3rd of 16 back-to-back series tonight. Canucks are 2-3-1 in back-to-back series this season with the loss.

Vancouver entered the game looking for their fifth home win of the season, and once again it eluded them.

Canucks now sit in 14th place in the NHL, tied for 3rd place in the Pacific division with Calgary, with 9 points, 5 points behind the Oilers, and 3 points behind the San Jose Sharks.

Canucks starting goalie Jacob Markstrom, stopped 30 of 34 shots in the game.

Markstrom, after four game starts, has a 2.35 GAA and a .913 SV%. He is now 1-4-0 for the season.

The Capitals would open up the scoring late in the opening period on a goal by Marcus Johansson (2), assisted by Matt Niskanen (5) at 17:57, to make it 1-0 Capitals.

Fifteen seconds later Washington would strike again to make it 2-0, on a goal by Tom Wilson (1), assisted by Evgeny Kuznetsov (3) and Marcus Johansson (4) at 18:12.

Just when you would think the period would end without another goal, the Canucks would make a statement, coming within a goal of the Capitals on a goal by Jannik Hansen, his 2nd goal of the season, at 19:54, assisted by Erik Gudbranson (2), to make it 2-1 Washington after one period.

Early in the second period, the Capitals would seemingly regain their two-goal lead at 3:56 on a goal by Nate Schmidt making it 3-1 Washington. But the goal was disallowed due to interference with the goaltender.

The score remained 2-1 Capitals, until a power play goal at 8:58 by Marcus Johansson (3), assisted by T.J. Oshie (1) and Nicklas Bachstrom (4), to give Washington a 3-1 lead.

It became a one-goal game again with less than three minutes left, when Bo Horvat would score his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Sven Baertschi (2) and Jake Virtanen (1) at 17:17, to make it 3-2 Capitals.

In the third, with less than three minutes left, and the Canucks pressing, T.J. Oshie would score to give the Capitals a two goal cushion 4-2, at 17:33, assisted by Andre Burakovsky (2) and Nat Schmidt (2).

Washington would score an empty-net goal after the Canucks pulled Jacob Markstrom  for a 5 on 4 with coincidental penalties to Virtanen and Backstrom.

Karl Alzner (1), unassisted at 18:42, and the Capitals win 5-2.
