The New York Islanders (7-6-5, 5th Metropolitan Division) defeated the Vancouver Canucks (8-4-3, t-3rd Pacific Division) 5-2 at Rogers Arena on November 14, 2024.
The Islanders’ victory extended their point streak to five games (3-0-2).
The Canucks fell to 2-3-3 at home, and are 1-2-0 on their 6-game homestand.
First Period
The Canucks came out with energy and took an early lead thanks to Jonathan Lekkerimäki‘s first NHL goal.
Lekkerimäki scored on a one-timer from the right face-off circle, beating Islanders starting goalie Semyon Varlamov at 2:40.
Vancouver controlled much of the play in the first half of the period, generating chances and keeping the Islanders in disarray in their own zone.
However, the Islanders began to rebound and start to play their game and started to push back as the period progressed.
They tied the game on a power play with just 2:37 remaining. Jean-Gabriel Pageau converted a no-look backhand pass from Anders Lee for the tap-in goal.
The period ended with the score tied 1-1, with shots favoring New York 9-3.
Second Period
The Islanders seized control of the game early in the second period with a quick two-goal burst.
Scott Mayfield scored just 14 seconds in, his shot deflecting off two Canucks sticks and past Canucks starting goalie Kevin Lankinen.
Pierre Engvall extended the lead to 3-1 at 2:10, jamming in a rebound after Lankinen made a save on Simon Holmstrom.
The Canucks struggled to generate much offense in the second, registering only 3 shots on goal to 15 for the Islanders.
The Islanders carried their 3-1 lead into the second intermission.
Third Period
The Canucks pushed back to get back in the game in the third, but the Islanders’ defense held firm.
Anders Lee eventually extended the Islanders’ lead to 4-1 at 11:42, finishing off a play set up by Bo Horvat.
Kyle Palmieri appeared to score for the Islanders, but the goal was overturned after a successful offside challenge by the Canucks.
Tyler Myers scored his first goal of the season for the Canucks with 1:21 remaining.
Noah Dobson added an empty-net goal for the Islanders with 26 seconds left to put the game away at 5-2 for the win.
Vancouver outshot New York 20-8 in the final period, but were outshot in the game 32-26.

Final Thoughts
The game turned in the second period when the Islanders scored two quick goals to take control.
Up to that point, Vancouver had a chance to come out from the first period intermission and play like they did against Calgary.
While the Canucks had a strong start and finish in the final period, they were unable to match the Islanders’ intensity and execution of the middle frame.
The Islanders’ strong defensive play and opportunistic scoring proved to be the difference, along with Canuck players inability or desire, to adhere to the game plan that was well-prepared to be used against the Islanders to generate a victory.
