VEGAS FRANCHISE UNVEILS TEAM NICKNAME, LOGO

The Las Vegas expansion team announced that it will be known as the Vegas Golden Knights. The long-awaited name of the city’s first major league sports franchise was revealed on Tuesday during a public ceremony outside T-Mobile Arena.

The team’s colors – steel grey, gold, red and black – reflect the community and focus of the franchise. Drawing on themes associated with knights, the helmet in the team’s logo includes a ‘V’ to represent Las Vegas. The secondary logos include swords that create the star from the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign.

KARLSSON REACHES MILESTONE IN OTTAWA’S VICTORY

Down 3-2 early in the third period, Mark Stone (1-2—3) and Erik Karlsson (1-1—2) scored 2:24 apart to lead the Senators to their seventh victory in their last nine regular-season meetings with the Canadiens dating to Jan. 15, 2015 (MTL: 2-5-2).

* Karlsson eclipsed the 400-point milestone while appearing in his 498th career game (104-297—401). In doing so, he became the 15th defenseman in NHL history to record 400-plus points in 500 or fewer contests, and the first to do so since Brian Leetch on Dec. 4, 1993 (380 GP).

* Stone equaled a career high with his eighth three-point performance and first since March 12 vs. TOR (1-2—3). Mike Hoffman (1-2—3) also matched a career high with his seventh three-point game and second of the season (also Oct. 18 vs. ARI: 0-3—3).

HURRICANES, BLUES EXTEND WINNING STREAKS

The Hurricanes and Blues both mounted comebacks to extend their winning streaks to five and four games, respectively:

* Behind 1-0 less than six minutes after the opening face-off, the Hurricanes potted two unanswered goals to stretch their winning streak to five contests, their longest such run since Dec. 31, 2013 – Jan. 9, 2014 (5-0-0). Cam Ward (25 SV), who has been in net for all five games, owns a 1.00 goals-against average, .962 save percentage and one shutout in that span.

* Down 2-1 midway through the second period, the Blues scored three unanswered goals to push their overall winning streak to four games and snap their road skid at four contests (0-4-0). Jori Lehtera (2-0—2) registered his third career multi-goal performance and first since April 11, 2015 vs. MIN (2-0—2).

LOOSE PUCKS

Road teams swept Tuesday’s five games to improve to 113-132-42 this season . . . Goaltender Steve Mason made a season-high 38 saves to help the Flyers pick up points for the fourth time in their past five outings (3-1-1) . . . Defenseman Nick Leddy scored in the 14th round to lead the Islanders over the Ducks in the longest shootout in each franchise’s history . . . Bruins forward David Backes potted the opening goal in his first game against his former team, the Blues. Backes totaled 206-254—460 during his first 10 NHL seasons in St. Louis (727 GP) . . . Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber (1-1—2) recorded his League-leading seventh power-play goal of 2016-17. He also paces all blueliners with eight total goals . . . Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech scored his first NHL goal (15 GP) . . . The Sharks signed defenseman Brent Burns to an eight-year contract extension . . . ICYMI: Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. attended practice and met with members of the Capitals on Tuesday.

The night before U.S. Thanksgiving features a 12-game NHL slate, highlighted by a national doubleheader on NBCSN.

First, the Flyers complete the second half of back-to-back outings when they visit the Lightning at Amalie Arena as part of NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Rivalry.

Two of the Western Conference’s top teams then face off when the Blackhawks meet the Sharks at SAP Center in the nightcap.

REMINDER: LAS VEGAS FRANCHISE NAME AND LOGO UNVEILING

The Las Vegas expansion franchise, which will begin play in 2017-18, will unveil its name and logo tonight at the Toshiba Plaza outside of T-Mobile Arena.

NHL Network will televise and NHL.com will livestream the event beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

LEAGUE, EPIX PARTNER FOR “ROAD TO THE NHL OUTDOOR CLASSICS” . . .

The NHL and EPIX announced that Road to the NHL Outdoor Classics will make its U.S. television debut on Friday, Dec. 16 (10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. CT).

The four-part series, which will be simulcast on NHL.com and EPIX.com, will chronicle the four teams participating in outdoor games at the start of 2017:

  • the Maple Leafs and Red Wings, who will face off in the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic on Jan. 1, and
  • the Blues and Blackhawks, who will meet in the 2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 2.

. . . MAPLE LEAFS, RED WINGS UNVEIL CENTENNIAL CLASSIC UNIFORMS

The Maple Leafs and Red Wings both unveiled their uniforms for the 2017 Scotiabank NHL Centennial Classic, which will take place on Sunday, Jan. 1, at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto (3 p.m. ET, NBC, SN, TVAS).

Toronto’s uniform is a contemporary variation of its home sweater, which celebrates the history of the team while giving a symbolic nod to the next century of Maple Leafs hockey.

Detroit’s uniform pays homage to the beginnings of the franchise, notably through a tribute to the original Detroit Cougars.

Both uniforms also honor the NHL’s Centennial celebration via the use of silver.

NHL, PA ANNOUNCE ALL-STAR GAME FORMAT, FAN BALLOTING

The NHL and NHLPA announced the format and fan balloting for the 2017 NHL All-Star celebration, which will be held Jan. 28-29 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

Introduced at last season’s event, the NHL All-Star Game will return to a 3-on-3 tournament of three 20-minutes games, with players from each division making up the four All-Star teams.

Each roster will include 11 players: six forwards, three defensemen and two goaltenders.

The 2017 NHL All-Star Fan Vote will determine the captains of the four teams, regardless of position, beginning next Thursday, Dec. 1.

The remaining 40 All-Stars will be named by NHL Hockey Operations.

RANGERS SCORE FIVE UNANSWERED IN VICTORY OVER PENGUINS

Down 2-0 after the first period, the Rangers scored five unanswered goals to defeat the Penguins in their first meeting since the opening round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a 4-1 series victory by Pittsburgh.

* The Rangers lead the NHL with 81 goals and a +34 margin through 20 games this season. They have scored at least five goals in 10 of their 20 contests.

* Four Rangers recorded multiple points, including Michael Grabner (1-1—2), who shares the League lead with 12 goals this season (20 GP) after totaling nine in 2015-16 (80 GP w/ TOR).

MULTI-GOAL PERFORMERS LIFT OILERS, PREDATORS TO WINS

The Oilers and Predators each picked up wins, aided by multi-goal performances:

* Leon Draisaitl (2-1—3) posted his third career multi-goal outing – and second of the season (also Oct. 14 at CGY: 2-1—3) – to propel the Oilers to their second straight win on the heels of a five-game skid. Connor McDavid (0-2—2) also notched multiple points; he paces the NHL with 16 assists and 24 points in 2016-17 (20 GP).

* P.K. Subban (2-0—2) registered his fourth career multi-goal performance – and first since Oct. 18, 2014 vs. COL (2-0—2 w/ MTL) – to lead the Predators to their fifth victory in their last seven contests. Ryan Ellis established a career high with three assists.

OVERTIME HEROICS

* The Blue Jackets tied the game with 6.5 seconds remaining in regulation, but Matt Duchene scored at 1:49 of overtime to help Colorado snap Columbus’ franchise-record home winning streak at seven contests. Duchene, who returned from a four-game absence, picked up his fifth career overtime goal and first since March 10, 2014 vs. WPG.

* The Wild evened the score early in the third period, but Jamie Benn potted the winning goal at 1:23 of overtime to lift the Stars to a 4-1-2 record in their past seven outings. Benn collected his third career overtime goal and first since Oct. 29, 2015 vs. VAN.

MUST SEE: GUENTZEL MAKES MEMORABLE NHL DEBUT

Penguins forward Jake Guentzel scored twice while making his NHL debut, including his first goal on his first shot of his first shift just 62 seconds into the game.

Via Elias, Guentzel registered the fastest goal by a Pittsburgh player in his NHL debut, besting the mark set by Rick Kessell on March 21, 1970 vs. CHI (2:19).

ICYMI: Guentzel’s parents and brother celebrated his debut performance from the stands of PPG Paints Arena.

LOOSE PUCKS

The Sabres scored three goals in 1:41 – their fastest three strikes since April 3, 1998 vs. BOS (1:08) – to improve to 11-0-2 in their last 13 home games against the Flames . . . Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot (31 SV) and Sharks goaltender Martin Jones (26 SV) earned their third and second shutouts of the season, respectively . . . Blue Jackets forward Cam Atkinson (2-0—2) registered his second multi-goal performance of 2016-17 to extend his point streak to five games (3-6—9) . . . Wild captain Mikko Koivu (0-1—1) collected his 400th NHL assist . . . ICYMI: Kings forward Jeff Carter, Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward and Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom were named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Nov. 20.

BACKES FACES BLUES FOR FIRST TIME SINCE OFFSEASON DEPARTURE

Former Blues captain David Backes, who signed with the Bruins as a free agent on July 1, faces his old club for the first time when St. Louis visits Boston at TD Garden as part of a national broadcast in both the U.S. (NBCSN) and Canada (SN).

A second-round selection (No. 62 overall) by the Blues in the 2003 NHL Draft, Backes played his first 10 seasons in St. Louis, where he amassed 206-254—460 in 727 regular-season appearances.

He also wore a letter in seven of those seasons, including the last five as captain of the team. Backes returns to St. Louis for the first time when the Bruins play the Blues at Scottrade Center on Jan. 10.
