Vancouver Takes Over Second Playoff Wild Card Spot In Western Conference With 3-2 Win Over Colorado

Vancouver (23-20-6=52 pts) played the second of a three game road trip tonight against the Colorado Avalanche (13-31-2=28 pts) at Pepsi Center.

The Canucks took on the Avalanche in their third and final meeting this season, looking for their 6th road win, while Colorado was looking for its 6th home win of the season.

Canucks Win 3-2

Vancouver scored the first two goals of the game, then Colorado came back with two unanswered to even the game at 2-2, but the Canucks on the power play, with Sven Baertschi’s second goal of the game, in the final frame, would prove to be the winning goal, as the Canucks squeaked by the home team Avalanche 3-2.

The win gives the Canucks points in 15 of their last 19 games (11-4-4), since Dec 14.

Tonight also marked the start of the Canucks’ 11th of 16 back-to-back series this season. They are now 8-12-1 in back-to-backs thus far this season. In 2015.16, the Canucks played in 13 back-to-back series posting a record of 10-12-4.

The win against the Avalanche leapfrogged Vancouver past Calgary and into sole possession of the second and last wild card playoff spot, behind St. Louis, in the Western conference.

The Canucks entered the game with points in 11 in their last 13 games, with a record since Dec 28th of 8-2-3, tied for 3rd best in the NHL, with an NHL 2nd best 1.92 GAA, and 3rd best FOW% at 53.4 percent.

Game Review

Vancouver led 1-0 after the first period, on a goal by Sven Baertschi, his 12th of the season, assisted by Bo Horvat (18) and Luca Sbisa (10), at 6:55, to make it 1-0.

 

Canucks out shot the Avalanche 20-9; Alex Burrows and Alex Edler had 4 shots each to lead the Canucks in the opening period, and Henrik Sedin was 5 for 7 in faceoffs, for 71 percent.

In the second, Vancouver doubled their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Markus Granlund, his 12th of the season, unassisted at 7:04. The Avalanche would finally get on the scoreboard at 16:28, cutting the Vancouver lead in half at 2-1, on a goal by Mikko Rantanen (7), assisted by Nathan MacKinnon (22) and Nikita Zadorov (9).

 

In the final period, Colorado tied the game at 2-2, with their second unanswered goal, by Matt Nieto (2) at 6:18, assisted by Gabriel Landeskog (8) and Matt Duchene (14).

The Canucks would finally answer back, on the power play, with the second goal of the game by Sven Baertschi, his 13th, assisted by Henrik Sedin (21) and Daniel Sedin (16), at 11:46, to give Vancouver a 3-2 lead, and proved to be the winning goal.

Vancouver hung on for their 6th road victory, a 3-2 win.

Markstrom Earns His 4th Road Win Of Season

Markstrom made his 20th start of the season, 11th on the road, and earned his 4th road victory, stopping 30 of 32 shots.

Markstrom’s season totals now stand at 9-9-3, with a 2.56 GAA, and a .913 Sv% and no shutouts, in 20 game starts.

On the road he is now, 4-7-1, with a 2.43 GAA, and a .922 Sv%.

Henrik Sedin Extends Points Streak, Bo Horvat Extends Goal Streak 

Henrik Sedin, extended his points streak with an assist against the Avalanche to 6 games (2-4=6 pts / 6 games)

Bo Horvat extended his goal streak to two games with his goal tonight (2-0=2 pts / 2 games).

Vancouver moves into 4th place in the Pacific division with the win, with 52 points, a point ahead 5th place Calgary, 10 points behind 3rd place Edmonton; 2 points ahead of 6th place Los Angeles; and 16 points ahead of 7th, and last place, Arizona.

The St Louis Blues and Vancouver presently occupy the two wild card playoff positions, with Vancouver a single point behind the Blues.

Vancouver complete their road trip at Arizona tomorrow night.
