Canucks Game Review: Too Little, Too Late, Vancouver Lose 4-2 To Florida

Vancouver (12-14-2=26 pts) played the third game of a 5 game road trip tonight at BB&T Center against Eastern conference rivals, Florida Panters (13-12-4=30 pts).

The Canucks began their 7th of 16 back-to-back series with tonight’s visit to Washington. They are 4-8-1 in back-to-backs thus far this season, after tonight.

Vancouver went for their second consecutive road win, and 5th win of the season away from Rogers Arena, while the Panthers were trying for their first home win since Nov 26.

The Canucks entered the final period behind 2-0, falling behind by three goals within 65 seconds of the start of the period.

With a big effort needed to overcome the large deficit, the Canucks did respond, by out shooting the Panthers 16-11 in the final frame, and took the play to Florida, scoring two consecutive goals, including one on the power play, to pull within a goal at 3-2.

But Vancouver just couldn’t get that third goal, and the Panthers sealed it with an empty net goal in the last minute, to win 4-2, to deny the Canucks back-to-back victories on the road trip.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 38 of 41 shots, and registered his 5th loss of the season, to go with 6 wins and 2 overtime losses.

Game notes:

  • Jack Skille scored his third goal in the last two games to make it 3-1 Florida
  • Daniel Sedin scored his 9th goal of the season on the power play, to pull the Canucks within a goal at 3-2.
  • Daniel Sedin extended his points streak to 4 games (3-2=5 pts).
  • Troy Stecher contributed with his 6th assist of the season, and had 8 shots on net; 1 attempted shot blocked; and 1 missed shot. He also had 2 hits.
  • Henrik Sedin, with his 11 assist; and Michael Chaput, with his 3rd, picked up points as well.

Canucks, continue to remain in 6th place in the Pacific division; 5 points in front of 7th place Arizona.

Game Summary

In the first, Florida would take an early 1-0 lead, as Aleksander Barkov (6) scored the opening goal of the game at 2:22, assisted by Seth Griffith (2).

Markus Granlund had 3 shots; Troy Stecher, 2 shots in the opening period for Vancouver.

In the second, after a penalty kill, the Panthers pull ahead of the Canucks by two goals, 2-0, on a goal by Derek MacKenzie (3), at 9:35, assisted by Paul Thompson (1) and Colton Sceviour (6).

Troy Stecher led the Canucks in shots after two periods with 6, and had one shot attempt blocked and one missed shot as well going into the final period. No other defensemen had registered a shot after two periods.

In the third, it would only take Florida 65 seconds to make it 3-0, and make it a nearly impossible for Vancouver to come back in the game.

The lunch pail line for the Canucks would get a goal as Jack Skille would get his 3rd goal in two games, his 3rd of the season, at 8:06, assisted by Michael Chaput (3), to bring Vancouver within two goals of Florida, 3-1.

Daniel Sedin, on the power play, brought the Canucks within a goal, 3-2, at 11:45, assisted by Troy Stecher (6) and Henrik Sedin (11).

With 1:36 left in the game, Jacob Markstrom was pulled for a 6th attacker to get the tying goal.

The Panthers would seal the game, with an empty net goal by Vincent Trocheck at 19:12, unassisted, to make it 4-2.

Markstrom To Start, Demko Recalled

Jacob Markstrom will start in goal for the Canucks, while Thatcher Demko has been recalled from the Utica Comets to replace Ryan Miller, who is still suffering from a lower body injury, suffered against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Ryan Miller was not on the ice as the Saturday morning skate began. Panthers practice goalie Bobby Segin filled in.

Hansen Returns Sunday

According to the Canucks, Jannik Hansen practiced this morning and feels good, he’s preparing to play Sunday in Washington.

The Panthers are 2-3-3 in their last 8 games overall; and 4-3-0 in their last 7 games at BB&T Center.

The Canucks are 3-3-0 in their last 6 road games; 5-3-1 in their last 9 games overall.

The Panthers and Canucks are playing their first of two meetings this season and their only meeting at BB&T Center. The Panthers visit Vancouver on January 20 to close out the season series.

After tonight, Canucks play: Washington, Dec 11; and, Carolina, Dec 13; before returning to Vancouver for 6 of the 8 remaining games in December, at Rogers Arena.
