VS ISLANDER NOTES
The Canucks are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games versus the Islanders (3-2-0 in their last 5 meetings)
The Canucks have 4 players with 14 or more career points versus the Islanders:
Daniel Sedin has 16 points (5-11-16) in 17 career games against the Islanders
Brandon Sutter has 16 points (9-7-16) in 26 career games versus the Islanders
Henrik Sedin has 15 points (4-11-15) in 15 career games against the Islanders
Loui Eriksson has 14 points (7-7-14) in 13 career games versus the Islanders
Loui Eriksson’s last power play goal on Mar. 12/16 came versus the Islanders
Ben Hutton’s first career goal occurred on Jan. 17/16 at Barclays Center
Jacob Markstrom’s first career win took place on Oct. 22/11 against the Islanders
Jayson Megna made his NHL debut on Oct. 25/13 vs the Islanders
What’s at stake:
Scoring goals. Not allowing goals.
Winning their first game on the road this season. Ending their 8 game winless streak.
Winning their first game of the 6 game road trip.
Sticking together and supporting the Canuck in good and in bad.
Past Canucks teams have had struggles starting the season.
Back in the 1982-83 season, Vancouver started with a road record of 0-5-1 ( Oct 6; Oct 12-20).
Vancouver went home and played three home games, and then took off for another five game road trip, from Oct 31-Nov 7, winning the first three, before finishing with two straight losses.
The Canucks of 1982-83 had an overall record of 6-8-2 after 16 games.
The lesson here: Vancouver this season is 0-4-1 on the road to start the season. The overall record is 4-6-2. If the Canucks can win two of their next four games, they could have a similar record. Just saying.
Oh, by the way, that 1982-83 team finished with 75 points.
The Canucks have to use their last game against the Maple Leafs to rally around, getting some early jump on the Islanders right from the opening game face-off.
Mission #1: Get the first goal of the game.
Mission #2: Draw the first penalty of the game.
Mission #3: Make the Islanders pay with the power play by scoring.
The Islanders are a physical team, 6th in the NHL in hits, and know how to frustrate the shooting lanes in their defensive end, as they are 1rst in the NHL in blocked shots with 237, an average of nearly 20 Bks/GP.
The Canucks backend is hurting without Chris Tanev and Alex Edler, and that was taken advantage of by the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
So, the Canuck forwards have to pick up their speed and come back strong to help their teammates on defense, and their goaltender.
