It’s been a week since the 2021-22 NHL season opened. The Vancouver Canucks haven’t even hit the ice for their home opener.
And yet here we are.
Just four games in and the local hockey market is on the brink of pandemonium. It’s hard to believe we’ve reached this point so soon, it’s actually kind of remarkable.
Vancouver’s yet to win a game in regulation despite playing three teams that missed the playoffs last season. The club’s only victory — in a shootout against the Philadelphia Flyers — came under the backdrop of a two-goal blown lead in the final five minutes. That was followed by clinching zero of a possible four points in games against the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres, with both teams missing its best player, Dylan Larkin and Jack Eichel, respectively. In the season opener against Edmonton, the Canucks were handily outplayed after the first 10 minutes and fortunate to mount a late push to tie the game and muster a point.
Yes, it’s only four games. I don’t think anyone needs a reminder that there’s plenty of time for the Canucks to rebound. That said, these four games have done enough to invite these early questions.
