Canucks Sign 2019 NHL Draft Prospect Aidan McDonough To A Two-Year, Entry-Level Contract

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has signed forward Aidan McDonough to a two-year, entry-level contract.

“Aidan has continued to improve his game each year since being drafted and we are very pleased to have agreed to terms with him today,” said Allvin. “He has steadily grown into a leadership role with Northeastern throughout his time there and our development team is looking forward to working with him as he starts his pro hockey career.”

McDonough, 23, recently completed his fourth season with the Northeastern University Huskies of the NCAA and his first serving as team captain. In 34 games this season, McDonough led the Huskies in goals (20) and points (38) while ranking third on the team in assists (18).

Last season, McDonough was named to the All-Hockey East First Team and AHCA East First All-American Team following a 25-goal and 39-point (25-14-39) campaign in 38 games played. He also earned the Three-Stars Award for most points three stars points earned in the Hockey East division.

The 6’2″, 200-pound forward produced at a point-per-game pace during his career with Northeastern, recording 124 points (66-58-124) in 124 games played to rank inside NU’s top 30 in all-time scoring. His 1.12 points-per-game pace this season is the highest of his college career.

Earlier this year, McDonough helped lead Northeastern to a Beanpot championship, netting the only shootout goal in a 3-2 win over Harvard University on February 13. The Milton, Massachusetts native previously won the Beanpot tournament in 2020 when he posted a game-high four points (1-3-4) in a 5-4 double-overtime victory over Boston University.

McDonough was originally selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the seventh round, 195th overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Canucks Sign Filip Johansson To Two-Year, Entry Level Contract

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a two-year, entry level contract with defenceman Filip Johansson.

“Filip plays a solid defensive game and has shown consistent improvement over the past three seasons.” said Allvin. “He will continue to develop his game in Sweden with Frölunda next season, but we look forward to welcoming him to Vancouver for Development Camp at UBC next month.”

Johansson, 22, is coming off his second season with Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where he recorded 11 points (3-8-11), eight penalty minutes and a +5 plus/minus rating. He also collected seven points (5-2-7) in nine playoff games, ranking t-1st on the team in goals (5) and co-leading Frölunda defencemen in points (7) to help the team reach the playoff semi-finals.

In 132 career SHL games split between Frölunda HC and Leksands IF, Johansson has registered 26 points (11-15-26) and 34 penalty minutes.

The Västerås, Sweden native has also represented his country multiple times during his career, highlighted by podium finishes at the 2016 World U-17 Hockey Challenge (gold), 2017 Hlinka Gretzky Cup (bronze), and 2018 IIHF World U18 Championship (bronze).

The 6’1″, 176-pound defenceman was originally selected by the Minnesota Wild in the first round, 24th overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
