Rink Wide Podcast: Dec. 14, 2021

Andrew and Jeff kicked off the show talking about Jim Rutherford and what they took from his press conference today. We heard clips of Jim talking about how he plans to fill out the front office. They talked about what the timeline leading to when we may start to see moves made with the roster.

Harm Dayal of the Athletic joined Wadden and JPat to talk about the news of the day. Talked about the strategy of Jim Rutherford moving forward based on his press conference from today. Says it’s hard to base any opinions on the first 20 games of the season. Now that the team is rolling, you still won’t make any decisions on the first four games of the Boudreau era. Says by January, the Boudreau bump will be over. Really likes the timeline do decipher what this team is and isn’t. Talked about where the team could go with the front office. Wonders if JR will go with someone in his immediate circle or if he will find someone bright outside. Mentions the name, Laurence Gilman. Talked about the job MacFarland did in Colorado with the defence and how that could be on his radar. Harm feels that Rutherford is well aware with what he needs and what he has. Will be fascinating to see how he handles the challenge. Talked about how JR handled questions about Quinn Hughes. Talked about the changes the Canucks need to make to fix the culture of the organization.

On the other side of Harm we hear more from Jim Rutherford. He explains why one of the hard parts of the job is managing up and dealing with the owner. JPat said he didn’t seem the least bit fazed with Francesco sitting right beside him. We also hear from the owner on what the last couple of weeks have been like for the organization. He explains why there was such an overhaul. The guys talked about what kind of person Jim Rutherford is looking for to be the next GM of the Canucks.

Andrew and Jeff talked about Jim Rutherford and what he brings to the Canucks. The guys talked about who could potentially fill the open GM role. Also touching on the kind of player and job number 1 for JR. They talked about the job that he did in Pittsburgh and the guys who rounded out the roster and supported the stars on the team. Including a guy like Nick Bonino in the 2016 cup run.

Wadden and JPat caught up with Sean Gentillie of the Athletic in Pittsburgh. Talked about if this is a good move for the Canucks, based off what he saw in PIT. He is going to do something and that is the overarching theory on this executive. Maybe he gets on a run and wins a couple cups or guides this thing off the rails. Expect to be busy, even if it’s low level stuff. He had the autonomy he needed there. He became accustomed to that. Talked about what really stood out to him in Rutherford’s time there.
