Vancouver, Defenceman Tyler Myers Agree to Terms on 3-Year Contract With A $3-Million AAV

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced Thursday afternoon that the Canucks have agreed to terms with defenceman Tyler Myers on a 3-year contract with a $3 million AAV.

“Tyler has been a valued member of our organization and we are very happy to have him back with our team,” said Allvin. “He brings a unique skillset to the ice and is a key member of our leadership group. Tyler is a big, strong, physical defenceman who fits in nicely on our backend.”

  • Myers, 34, appeared in 77 games this season, tallying 29 points (5-24-29), 77 penalty minutes and a +16 plus/minus rating.
  • His 24 assists and 29 points each ranked third amongst Canucks defencemen.  
  • The 6’8”, 229lbs defenceman has played 995 career regular season games split between Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Buffalo, recording 371 points (93-278-371), 787 penalty minutes and a +9 plus-minus rating
  • Myers won the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year during the 2009.10 season. He has also appeared in 61 post-season matchups, recording 16 points (7-9-16). 
  • The Houston, TX native has represented Canada on multiple occasions, including the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships, winning gold, as well as the 2010, 2014, and 2023 World Championships, winning gold in 2023. 
  • Myers was originally selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the first round, 12th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

LAS VEGAS (June 27, 2024) – Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks is the 2023-24 recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded “to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position,” as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

Hughes received his award at the 2024 NHL Awards, held at Fontainebleau, Las Vegas on Thursday night.

  • Hughes is the first Canucks defenseman to win the Norris Trophy.
  • The 24-year-old Orlando, Fla., native is the fourth U.S.-born player to capture the award, following Chris Chelios (3x, last 1995-96), Brian Leetch (2x, last 1996-97) and Adam Fox (2020-21).
  • The Canucks captain posted a dominant win, earning 172 first-place votes among the 194 voters.
  • He was a top-three selection on every ballot in collecting 1,864 voting points. Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators, the 2020 Norris Trophy winner, placed second (1,207), followed by Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche, the 2022 Norris recipient (893).
  • In his debut season wearing the ‘C’ Hughes paced NHL defensemen with 75 assists and 92 points (17-75—92 in 82 GP) – both figures franchise records for a blueliner, ahead of the marks he established in 2022‑23 (7-69—76 in 78 GP) – to guide the Canucks to their first playoff berth since 2019‑20 and first division title since 2012-13.
  • Hughes also ranked among the leading defensemen in power-play assists (1st; 33), power-play points (2nd; 38), plus/minus (4th; +38), goals (t-6th; 17), total time on ice (7th; 2,024:10), shots on goal (9th; 199) and power-play goals (t-9th; 5).
  • He became the eighth-fastest blueliner in NHL history to accumulate 300 career points, doing so in his 331st contest (Jan. 24 vs. STL). Hughes also became the third defenseman in League history – after Paul Coffey and Bobby Orr – to register at least 200 assists over a three-season span, reaching the total April 8 vs. VGK.
